What Software / IT hiring looks like for candidates

Software and IT roles on HireSetu span product engineering, services delivery, QA, and platform work. Hiring usually rewards clear problem-solving, a strong primary stack, and evidence you can ship with a team.

Software / IT hiring on HireSetu, read across employers

Written on 2026-09-11 from the 163 Software / IT listings open then, across 110 employers; 131 are open today. It describes clusters and proportions rather than individual listings.

Software is the largest industry on HireSetu by a wide margin, and the sample says two things a candidate searching for software jobs might not expect. It is an entry-level market almost entirely: roughly eight in ten of the listings ask for zero years of experience, the remainder ask for one or two, and not a single posting in the set wants three or more. And most of the hiring is not being done by software companies. Banks, industrial manufacturers, pharmaceutical firms and consultancies account for far more of these roles than the names a computer-science graduate would list first.

Who is actually hiring for software

The pure technology employers are here — Google, Microsoft, Amazon, NVIDIA, Cisco, Salesforce, Oracle, Autodesk, Zoho — but between them they hold perhaps thirty listings out of more than 160. The rest sit with companies whose product is something else. Financial services is the largest block: Barclays, Standard Chartered, Citi, Mastercard, American Express, State Street, CME Group, FIS and BNP Paribas together list around twenty software roles. Industrial and hardware firms are next: Honeywell, Eaton, Emerson, Caterpillar, GE Vernova, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Yokogawa, Texas Instruments, Applied Materials, KLA, Infineon. Then healthcare and pharma: Thermo Fisher, Medtronic, Merck, Pfizer, IQVIA, athenahealth, Edwards Lifesciences. For a graduate the practical consequence is that the software job is very often inside a bank's or a manufacturer's technology centre, with that company's domain wrapped around it.

Concentration is low. Accenture lists the most, then HPE, Barclays and Cisco, and after those no employer has more than three; three-quarters of the employers in the set have exactly one opening. The cleanest single intake is Barclays in Pune: seven roles, all software — two full-stack developers, a developer, a software developer, a software engineer, an automation tester and a scrum master — which reads as one graduate cohort being filled at one site.

The stack the postings name

Java and Python tie at the top and nothing else comes close; SQL is a clear third, JavaScript fourth. Under Java sits the enterprise pattern spelled out — Spring Boot, microservices and REST APIs each recur across a dozen or more postings. What is notable for zero-years roles is how much infrastructure vocabulary appears beside the language: AWS and Azure each on more than a dozen listings, CI/CD likewise, Docker and Kubernetes not far behind. An entry-level backend posting in this sample routinely expects the candidate to know what a container and a pipeline are, even if it does not expect them to have run one in production. Frontend is a minority — React, Angular, Node and TypeScript together appear less often than Java alone. And the screening vocabulary is consistent across employers: data structures, algorithms, and debugging in one spelling or another on more than twenty postings, which is what a fresher interview here actually tests.

AI in the title, at zero years

Eight postings carry AI or Agentic in the title, and every one of them is an entry-level role. Read closely, they are Java or Python engineering positions where the application layer calls a language model: peopleHum's Agentic AI Java Developer and Zycus's AI-Native Java Engineer both list Java first and the model second. None is a research role. A graduate with a solid Java foundation and working familiarity with calling an LLM through an API is the profile these describe, not a machine-learning specialist, and the titles should be read that way.

Support is a different door into the same building

Around fifteen listings are support or service-desk roles — L1 desk, application support, technical support engineering — and they share the Software tag with the engineering roles above without sharing their requirements. They name no programming stack, several specify shift patterns, and the work is ticket resolution and escalation rather than building anything. That is a legitimate entry into IT operations, and Zoho, Oracle and Salesforce all use it as one, but a candidate preparing a coding portfolio for a service-desk interview has prepared for the wrong conversation. The title tells you which door you are at.

Where the roles are

Bengaluru holds about four in ten of the listings. Pune is second at around one in six — Barclays, Mastercard, Eaton, Equifax, HMH, Fujitsu and the Pune apprenticeships at StoneX and Blue Yonder — and Hyderabad third, with Microsoft, Salesforce, FedEx, Phenom and Cisco's trainee intake. Chennai has Standard Chartered, Citi, Zoho, KLA and Wolters Kluwer. Two-thirds of the roles are on-site, one in five hybrid, and roughly one in seven is listed remote, though a few of those remote tags belong to postings that are not engineering roles.

Reading the sample

The Software tag on HireSetu comes from the employer's own portal category, so a handful of listings here are not software work at all — Accenture's aircraft-interior and materials-engineering roles are the clearest examples, and a front-office executive posting sits in the list too. Read the title, not the tag. This is a large sample by this site's standards but still a snapshot. What it says with confidence is that software hiring in India, as it reaches HireSetu, is a graduate market spread thinly across more than a hundred employers, most of them not in the software business, asking for Java or Python and the fundamentals to prove it.
