HireSetu's note

Testing the operating system itself

When the product under test is an operating system, the job changes shape. You build tests for a system that starts up, allocates memory and storage, runs workloads and recovers from failures, then run them on lab or emulated machines and work out what went wrong. Console output, system logs and dumps become your reading material, and isolating one defect can mean cutting it down across several components first.

Defect investigation and fix validation sit high in the listing, so a lot of the week goes on reproducing a failure, narrowing it and proving the fix holds. It's slow, methodical work.

Lead your CV with automation

Start with test automation and tooling: what you built or extended, in which language, and what it saved. Automation shows up twice in the requirements, so it carries weight. Follow it with one debugging story: the defect, how you isolated it, what changed.

Then the closest thing you have to systems-level testing. Operating systems, firmware, hypervisors, drivers and embedded software count for more here than a long list of web test suites. Name the CI and DevOps tools you have actually used. FMEA and Six Sigma appear in the skills list; a line each if you've worked with them, nothing more.

Where four to six years lands you

That 4 to 6 years is experience in test development overall, and the mainframe names, z/OS, zTPF, zVM and zVSE, sit under preferred. A solid automation and debugging background with no mainframe exposure is a fair read of it. This is a small specialist corner of QA, and getting in means learning z/OS basics on your own time: JCL, ISPF, TSO, how a system starts and stops. An evening with an emulator setup teaches the vocabulary.

Bengaluru, full-time. The systems you test get configured and restarted by hand, so plan for time at the office, and settle the lab and remote split early if it affects your decision.
