A supplier-facing engineering job

Your day-to-day counterparts are the Pune distribution centre, the purchasing team and outside suppliers, with product companies and a global aftermarket engineering group sitting further out. The degree bar is mechanical or electromechanical, and supplier, manufacturing or product engineering experience is called an advantage. Two years around a shop floor, a supplier quality desk or a product engineering team makes the work familiar from the first month.

Expect drawings, tolerance arguments, test reports and supplier calls more than long CAD stretches. English is the working language of that global network, and technical discussions with a supplier who is guessing at your requirement cost weeks. Travel to supplier sites is the obvious way to do this job well, so ask how much of it the role carries.

Reverse engineering carries the work

A large share of this job is taking an existing spare part, working out how it is made, and getting a local supplier to produce one that behaves the same. That means measuring the original, reading or rebuilding the drawing, pinning down material and surface treatment, then running the tests that prove the copy is fit for service.

Revise fits and tolerances, GD&T, first-article inspection and what a qualification programme actually involves, from sample approval through to a signed-off component change. Industrial equipment parts, castings, machined shafts, seals, have their own habits, and knowing a handful of common material grades will keep the supplier conversation short.

Bring one story where a part or a supplier sample went wrong and you traced the cause. The listing includes investigating technical issues, supporting corrective actions and documenting engineering activities, so bring a clear account of how you traced a root cause.
