A week at the drawing desk

SolidWorks or AutoCAD will be open most of the day, and the drawings you touch belong to retrofit and upgrade cases an experienced engineer owns. Expect a mix of modifying models, tidying drawings, pulling together BOMs and chasing spare part details. Retrofit work means drawing around a boiler that already sits on a customer site, and the reference material is old site drawings. Some of your questions go to engineers in Finland or Sweden, so a couple of hours of overlap land at one end of your day.

Brush up on drawing conventions

Get comfortable with orthographic and section views, tolerances, surface finish marks and weld symbols before you start. BOM structure matters too: what a line item carries, how part numbers and quantities are ordered, and why one missing item stalls a purchase. On the mechanical side, read up on pressure parts, heat exchangers and the flue gas path through a boiler, since that is the equipment these retrofit cases revolve around. Taking a faded legacy drawing and working out what actually changed is the everyday skill here.

After the apprenticeship

The listing describes a path from assisting on tasks to holding basic engineering tasks yourself, which is the normal shape of a service engineering apprenticeship. Mechanical design, project engineering and service roles in pulp, paper and energy sit directly ahead of it. This is a contract position, so the length of the apprenticeship and what happens when it ends are worth clarifying before you plan around it. Ask which retrofit cases you would start on and who you would report to.
