Quick answer: This team designs the switches, keypads, knobs and seals that sit inside a truck or machine cab, small precision mechanism work held to tight tolerances in Creo or CATIA. Eaton's Mobility Group, which owns this product line, is being combined into a separate company, a process expected to finish by mid-2027.

From Eaton's job posting

What you’ll do

Eaton announced, on June 11, 20206, the intent to combine its Mobility Group (including both the Vehicle and eMobility segments) with a new company. We expect to complete this process by the end of the first half of 2027. The compensation and benefits that will initially be offered for this position are based on Eaton's plans, programs and practices. If you are offered and accept this position and are actively employed by the Mobility Group when the transaction closes, the new company will provide further details to employees concerning compensation and benefits at that time.

This position is part of the Vehicle Controls Product Line engineering team and supports the mechanical design and development of rugged operator-control products for on-road and off-road vehicles and commercial mobile equipment. Products include rocker, toggle, push-button, key-lock, and rotary switches; indicators; multiplexed keypad and electronic switch modules; operator-control and human-machine interface products; and vehicle input/output modules. The engineer will translate customer and system requirements into robust mechanical concepts, detailed designs, drawings, and product-validation plans. The role supports the full product-development cycle—from requirements review and concept selection through design release, verification, validation, production launch, and lifecycle support—while collaborating with electronics, systems, software, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, suppliers, and global engineering teams.

"What you’ll do

  • Develop mechanical concepts, layouts, 3D models, and production drawings for Vehicle Controls products, including rocker, toggle, push-button, key-lock, and rotary switches; indicators; multiplexed keypads and electronic switch modules; operator-control and human-machine interface products; and vehicle input/output modules.
  • Design product housings, bezels, buttons, rockers, toggles, knobs, plungers, light guides, mounting features, terminal and connector interfaces, seals, gaskets, fastening systems, springs, and actuation mechanisms.
  • Convert customer, system, packaging, ergonomic, styling, environmental, reliability, safety, and manufacturing requirements into clear mechanical design requirements and verification criteria.
  • Perform engineering calculations, tolerance stack-ups, material and process selection, and design trade-off studies to support technically sound decisions.
  • Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and Eaton drafting standards to create accurate, manufacturable, serviceable, and robust designs.
  • Support design reviews and risk-management activities, including design failure mode and effects analysis, critical-to-quality identification, P-diagrams, and design-for-six-sigma methods.
  • Coordinate prototype builds and mechanical verification and validation testing; analyze results, document conclusions, and support corrective actions.
  • Work with manufacturing and suppliers on design for manufacturing and assembly, tooling feasibility, appearance and tactile quality, part quality, and production-launch issues.
  • Support current-product engineering, value analysis/value engineering, localization, cost-out, quality improvement, and engineering change activities.
  • Prepare and maintain design records, bills of material, engineering change documentation, calculations, test reports, and lessons learned in accordance with the product-development process.
  • Communicate technical status, risks, and recommendations to project stakeholders and escalate issues with supporting data.
  • Perform assigned work with guidance from senior engineers while taking ownership of quality, schedule, and closure of defined engineering deliverables."

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline; a master’s degree is preferred.

0–2 years of relevant experience with a master’s degree, or 2–4 years with a bachelor’s degree, in mechanical product design and development. Automotive or vehicle-control product experience is preferred.

Skills

"• Experience or academic exposure relevant to rugged Vehicle Controls products such as rocker, toggle, push-button, key-lock, and rotary switches; indicators; multiplexed keypads and electronic switch modules; operator-control or human-machine interface products; and vehicle input/output modules.

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and detailed drawing creation using Creo and/or CATIA.
  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, tolerance stack-up analysis, fits, interfaces, and engineering calculations.
  • Understanding of mechanical design principles for injection-molded plastics, elastomers, die-cast parts, sheet metal, machined parts, terminals, fasteners, seals, buttons, rockers, toggles, knobs, plungers, springs, light guides, and actuation mechanisms.
  • Knowledge of material selection, manufacturing processes, design for manufacturing and assembly, tooling considerations, and supplier drawing reviews.
  • Ability to develop concepts that meet packaging, ergonomics, tactile and audible feedback, appearance, ingress protection, vibration, shock, thermal, durability, safety, reliability, lifecycle, and cost targets.
  • Working knowledge of design failure mode and effects analysis, design reviews, root-cause analysis, structured problem solving, and verification and validation methods.
  • Familiarity with product lifecycle management, bills of material, engineering change control, and configuration management.
  • Ability to support prototype builds and mechanical testing, including dimensional, operating-force and travel, tactile-response, vibration, shock, thermal, ingress-protection, and durability evaluations, as applicable.
  • Sound analytical skills and the ability to document assumptions, calculations, test evidence, and technical conclusions."

"• Clear written and verbal communication, including concise technical reports and presentations.

  • Collaboration across mechanical, electronics, systems, software, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and supplier teams.
  • Learning agility and willingness to seek guidance while building technical depth.
  • Ownership of assigned deliverables, attention to detail, and disciplined follow-through.
  • Data-based problem solving, sound judgment, and timely escalation of risks.
  • Customer focus, integrity, inclusion, and a strong commitment to safety and quality."

HireSetu's note

Two experience bars, and a corporate split

The header says 0-4 years; the qualifications split that into two bars. 0-2 years with a master's, 2-4 with a bachelor's. A fresh master's graduate is in range. A bachelor's holder needs a couple of real design years behind them, and automotive or vehicle-control exposure is listed as a preference, not a gate.

Creo or CATIA is a gate, and so is working GD&T with tolerance stack-ups, fits and interface calculations. Coursework CAD counts only if you can explain why a datum or a tolerance was set the way it was. FMEA, DFM, PLM, BOMs and change control run through the listing, but those read as the process you'd learn rather than a filter at application.

One structural thing: Eaton is combining its Mobility Group, which owns this product line, with a separate company, expected to finish by the end of the first half of 2027. This role sits inside that group, so the entity employing you at that point may not be Eaton.

Small parts, hard environments

Scan mechanical design jobs at auto suppliers and most are brackets, housings and structural parts. This one is the other extreme: rockers, toggles, plungers, springs, light guides, gaskets and connector interfaces packed inside a cab-facing control. Injection-molded plastics, elastomers, die-cast and small machined parts are the everyday materials.

The hard part is the environment. A switch on a tractor or a commercial vehicle has to take vibration, shock, thermal cycling and dust and water ingress, and still feel and sound right to the person pressing it. That's why prototype builds and mechanical testing run through the role, covering operating force, travel, tactile response, durability and ingress protection.

Expect most of your week in CAD and drawings, with time on the bench testing samples. The scope runs from concept to design release and production launch, so you follow a product from early sketches to the line.
