Quick answer: The title is long, the core of the job is short: taking a fresh MCU board from power sequencing and clocks through to working peripherals on an XR device. Hands-on custom board bring-up is the gate. The Android wording around it is mostly context for who you'll work with.

From Quest Global's job posting

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform MCU and board bring-up, including power sequencing, clocks, reset, boot configuration, and peripheral initialization.
  • Develop and debug embedded C/C++ firmware on bare-metal or RTOS platforms.
  • Implement and validate interfaces such as SPI, I²C, UART, USB, GPIO, PWM, and ADC.
  • Bring up sensors and peripherals, including IMUs, proximity sensors, touch controllers, and haptic devices.
  • Develop communication between the MCU and application processor, including messaging protocols, interrupts, buffering, error handling, and recovery.
  • Collaborate with Android BSP, kernel, and HAL teams to integrate MCU functionality into the Android XR system.
  • Implement and validate low-power modes, suspend/resume, wake-up events, watchdogs, and fault recovery.
  • Support sensor timestamping, synchronization, and latency analysis for XR use cases.
  • Debug hardware and firmware issues using JTAG/SWD debuggers, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Develop automated tests for functional validation, reliability, performance, and power consumption.
  • Document bring-up procedures, test results, root-cause findings, and integration requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong embedded C/C++ programming and debugging skills.
  • Hands-on experience with MCU firmware development and custom board bring-up.
  • Experience with ARM Cortex-M or comparable MCU architectures.
  • Working knowledge of an RTOS such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr, including tasks, interrupts, synchronization, and memory management.
  • Experience developing and debugging peripheral drivers and serial communication interfaces.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, component datasheets, and hardware interface specifications.
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux or Android integration and the interaction between firmware, kernel drivers, and HALs.
  • Experience with Python or shell scripting for test automation.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with XR/AR/VR devices, wearables, sensor hubs, or other low-power embedded products.
  • Experience integrating MCU subsystems with Android-based application processors.
  • Familiarity with ADB, Android logs, Linux kernel logs, and system tracing.
  • Experience with IMU data acquisition, sensor calibration, FIFO handling, and time synchronization.
  • Knowledge of bootloaders, secure boot, firmware updates, and recovery mechanisms.
  • Exposure to display or camera synchronization and related control signals.
  • Experience supporting prototype hardware through production readiness.

HireSetu's note

Where the bar sits

Custom board bring-up on real hardware, embedded C/C++ on bare metal or an RTOS, ARM Cortex-M, and the RTOS internals around tasks, interrupts and memory: those four are asked for flat out, and the work is built on them. Python or shell scripting for test automation and familiarity with embedded Linux or Android appear in the required list too, but "familiarity" is doing real work there. You need to read Android and kernel logs and hold a conversation with BSP and HAL teams, not write Android drivers.

The XR-specific items are preferred: wearables or sensor hubs, ADB and system tracing, IMU FIFO handling and calibration, bootloaders and secure boot, display sync. Those are what separates a strong applicant from a very strong one on this team. None of them is a reason to skip applying if your bring-up record is solid.

Lead your CV with bring-up

This suits someone a few years into embedded firmware whose work has run on custom boards. If your experience is all on vendor dev kits and finished hardware, the bring-up part of your CV will read thin, and that is the first thing scanned for here.

Order it accordingly: the board you brought up, the MCU on it, what you sequenced, which interfaces you got talking, how you debugged them. Name the logic analyzer or scope and the fault you chased down with it. That says more than a list of protocols. RTOS projects next, then Python test automation, then anything touching Android logs, ADB or kernel tracing. Sensor work belongs high if you have it, since timestamping and latency come up in XR use cases.

Supporting prototype hardware through to production is listed as preferred, and that kind of work lands on engineers who have already shipped boards. A fresher with a Cortex-M project and no bring-up won't get far.
