Quick answer: Validation, not firmware development: you'll test firmware on ARM microcontrollers, chase down defects and script parts of the testing. The gate is tight. Itron wants a 2025 or recent graduate with no backlogs and no prior full-time or apprenticeship work on the record.

HireSetu's note

The two gates that actually close

No prior full-time work experience and no prior apprenticeship experience is the line that matters most here. A year on any payroll, anywhere, disqualifies you, so don't stretch the dates on your CV for this one. No active backlogs at application time is the second hard gate. The degree list is broad: electronics, electrical, instrumentation, telecom, computer science and IT all qualify.

Validation means breaking things on purpose

The work is reading firmware to work out how it fails, reproducing the failure, and writing it up precisely enough that someone else can fix it. You'll be in C and Assembly source far more than you'll be authoring it. If the part of your final-year project you enjoyed most was tracing why a board kept hanging, that instinct transfers.

Worth revising before you apply

ARM microcontroller fundamentals: interrupts, peripherals, the memory map, startup code. In C, pointers, bit masking and why volatile matters in embedded code. How UART, SPI and I2C traffic looks on a logic analyser. Python, since automation is listed as Python or C#, so one small script that logs serial output gives you something concrete to discuss. Practice writing a defect the way the team will expect it: what you did, what happened, what you expected, how to reproduce it.

The RF and battery detail

RF-enabled and battery-operated devices appear on the desirable list. Anything you know about radio basics, or about measuring current draw on a battery-powered board, gives you a head start on that side of the products. Itron's customers are utilities and energy companies, so the firmware you test ends up in the field. Agile ceremonies are part of the routine: planning, reviews, retrospectives.
