Quick answer: A 0-2 year mechanical design job making the fixtures that support Molex's manufacturing, test and reliability work: NX models, drawings, tolerance stacks, then following the hardware through build and validation. A fixture you have designed and seen built tells a better story than a list of software.

Your Job

As a Fixture Design & Automation Engineer, you will contribute to the design, development, and validation of innovative mechanical and electromechanical solutions that support manufacturing, testing, reliability, and automation initiatives. In this role, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to transform engineering requirements into practical, high-quality solutions while building your expertise in fixture design, automation systems, and product realization. You will have opportunities to take ownership of engineering deliverables, solve challenging technical problems, and create value through continuous improvement and innovation.

Our Team

You will be part of the Fixture Design & Automation team, supporting the development of manufacturing, test, and reliability solutions that enable efficient product development and production. Our team partners closely with engineering, operations, quality, suppliers, and technicians to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective solutions that improve productivity and accelerate innovation.

What You Will Do

Design and develop mechanical and electromechanical fixtures that support testing, manufacturing, reliability, and automation applications.

Convert engineering requirements into practical concepts that balance performance, quality, manufacturability, cost, and safety.

Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of materials, and supporting technical documentation.

Collaborate with suppliers, technicians, procurement teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to bring designs from concept through implementation.

Support prototype builds, validation activities, troubleshooting efforts, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Apply engineering principles such as GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFM/DFA, and component selection to create robust and reliable designs.

Contribute to automation projects through the integration of sensors, actuators, motion-control systems, and other electromechanical technologies.

Drive standardization, value improvement, and design optimization opportunities that enhance efficiency and reduce costs.

Participate in design reviews and technical discussions while promoting engineering excellence, quality, and safety.

Manage assigned project activities, communicate risks proactively, and ensure timely delivery of commitments.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

0–2 years of experience in fixture design, mechanical design, product development, tooling, automation, manufacturing engineering, test systems, or special purpose equipment.

Working knowledge of Siemens NX or a comparable 3D CAD software for creating models and engineering drawings.

Understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, DFM/DFA principles, and mechanical design fundamentals.

Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining, fabrication, welding, sheet metal, or additive manufacturing.

Ability to interpret engineering requirements and communicate technical concepts effectively.

Demonstrated problem-solving skills and a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

What Will Put You Ahead

Experience designing manufacturing, reliability, or test fixtures through academic projects, internships, or industry experience.

Knowledge of fixture design principles including 3-2-1 locating, poka-yoke, ergonomic design, and safe machine design practices.

Exposure to automation systems involving sensors, pneumatics, actuators, servo motors, stepper motors, or motion-control components.

Familiarity with tolerance analysis, machine elements, material selection, and engineering calculations.

Understanding of Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE) methodologies and cost optimization concepts.

Experience working with cross-functional teams, suppliers, or prototype development activities.

Strong documentation and technical reporting skills.

HireSetu's note

Put a real fixture first

NX is the named tool, so lead with it, then GD&T and tolerance stack-up. Those are the three the drawings and the shop floor will test, since your models go to a machinist and a technician who have to make the part work. If your CAD experience is coursework parts, say what they were for and what constraints you designed around.

Projects beat software lists. A college project where you located a part, picked off-the-shelf components and checked whether the assembly could be machined reads better than a row of tool names. Add any time you took a design to a workshop or a machinist and had to fix it afterwards.

Fixtures get built one at a time

The job lives in the details: a clamp that interferes with the tool, a dowel hole that misses, a bracket that flexes under load. Expect time in CAD, time on the floor during build and validation, and real time chasing suppliers and technicians for quotes, schedules and answers about what went wrong.

Automation appears as something to grow into, so a fresher likely starts on mechanical fixtures, with sensors, pneumatics and motion hardware coming later.

Ask before you accept

Two things decide how the role feels day to day. Whether you take a fixture from concept through build yourself or draft for a senior engineer, since at 0-2 years both happen and the second is slow to learn from. And how many projects run at once, plus who signs off on designs.

The work is onsite, so ask how the week splits between the desk, the floor and suppliers. If you know SolidWorks or Creo but not NX, confirm which tool the team works in and how much tolerance analysis you would run yourself.
