Quick answer: Board-level hardware work in Hyderabad: designing the custom PCBs that connect Micron's automated test equipment to the memory chips it tests, then debugging them on the bench. Freshers are in scope, but the tools are lab instruments and Python.

From Micron's job posting

JR110990 ENGINEER, SIG ELECTRICAL DESIGN

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all.

Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.

As an Electrical Design Engineer in the Systems Integration Group (SIG) of Micron Technology, Inc, you will design load boards that support semiconductor memory manufacturing, as well as resolve issues with and develop improvements to deployed automated test equipment (ATE) products.

Load boards, used for testing memory devices after they are manufactured & packaged, are the contact interface between ATE and pins of the device under test (DUT). Load boards contain the necessary components to:

  • setup the DUT for correct testing by the ATE;
  • route power, test, and response signals between the DUT and the ATE;
  • provide additional test capabilities that the ATE may not be able to provide; and,
  • alternately, testing or calibrate the ATE itself.

Load board design considerations, like other PCB assemblies, include DC power supply distribution, clock & digital routing, and high-speed signal integrity. You will apply circuit theory to design load board solutions working closely with other team members located around the world that include other engineering disciplines, technicians, procurement, planning, and external contract manufacturers.

Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Develop requirements specifications
  • Analog and digital circuit design and simulation
  • Schematic capture
  • Work closely with layout designers to develop PCBs
  • Author test plans and lab reports
  • Debug and verify PCB assemblies
  • Use lab equipment including oscilloscope, power supply, electronic load, and TDR instruments
  • Python scripting and data analysis
  • Document and control designs
  • Support prototype qualification by the customer including deployment, design changes, and issue resolution
  • Manage engineering changes using version control processes
  • Support released designs for issues or additional design & development requests
  • Integrate AI-assisted tools and insights into daily work to improve efficiency, quality, and effectiveness while exercising sound judgment and complying with organizational standards and legal requirements.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by identifying, testing, and sharing AI-enabled enhancements within the scope of work.

Independence

  • Follows detailed instructions
  • Applies learned technical concepts with significant guidance

Contribution

  • Solves straightforward problems and seeks guidance as needed
  • Researches, gathers, and analyzes information related to specific assignments within the technical discipline
  • Provides suggestions for improvements to processes and procedures

Impact

  • Makes decisions within a limited scope which can impact the quality of the job holder’s work
  • Impact is contained to the job

Skills and Experience

  • Integrates knowledge of basic concepts, principles, and theories of technical discipline
  • Applies basic interpersonal skills

HireSetu's note

The board between the tester and the chip

Load boards are custom PCBs that sit between automated test equipment and the pins of the memory device being tested. They set the device up for testing, route power and signals back and forth, and sometimes add test capability the tester does not have. It is all board-level: DC power distribution, clock and digital routing, high-speed signal integrity.

Schematic capture and simulation are the first half of the job. The second half is the bench, probing a board you designed with an oscilloscope, electronic load and TDR until it behaves. The team sits across time zones and works with external contract manufacturers, so your documentation gets read by people you never meet.

Basics to have cold

Transmission lines, impedance matching, reflections, crosstalk, insertion loss, eye diagrams. Decoupling and power distribution, differential pairs, and reading a TDR trace to spot where a trace's impedance goes wrong. On the analog side: op-amp circuits, comparators, level shifting, protection.

Python is listed for scripting and data analysis, so think about pulling measurements off an instrument into a script and plotting them. If your only Python is a college lab, write something small that reads a CSV and plots it.

After a couple of years

Load board design pushes you into signal integrity, a narrow skill that is hard to pick up outside a bench. Two years in, you would have a set of high-speed boards behind you, some feel for stackup and layout trade-offs from working alongside layout designers, and debug habits that come only from real hardware.

From there: deeper SI work, test or ATE hardware engineering, or the ladder this posting names, Systems Design Engineer 2 up to Systems Design Engineer 3.

Pin down before you apply

Which grade in that 2 to 3 band the opening is being filled at. It decides your title, your pay band and how much latitude you get on design choices.

Then: which types of load boards you would start on, whether layout stays in-house or goes to a partner, and how many boards one engineer carries at a time. Relocation level is marked TBD, so settle that before committing to Hyderabad.

If you already work at Micron, the standard internal application policy applies. Your manager has to be told before you interview, and hiring managers can pull appraisals, your original resume and transcripts.
