Quick answer: A year of coding plus a year of data structures and algorithms gets you to the bar; Go, Kubernetes and GCP are what the work is made of. You'd join the VM team on Google Distributed Cloud, building for customers who run the stack with no internet connection.

About the job
Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search.
We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day.
As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.
Google Distributed Cloud aims to deliver solutions for a subset of very large customers with strict regulatory requirements to address a huge opportunity for Google Cloud. In this role, you will have the opportunity to join the Virtual Machine (VM) team—a critical and central cog in the infrastructure—to help build the product early in its lifecycle and make a big impact.
Responsibilities
Design and develop skills to build features to enable more effective deployment and operation of Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) air-gapped.
Review design documents and code written by other engineers, and provide feedback to ensure best practices. Work with partner teams to accelerate development and delivery of the platform.
Collaborate with other engineers, Product Managers (PMs), and Technical Program Managers (TPMs) to deliver a high-quality system.
Contribute to existing documentation or educational content, and adapt content based on product/program updates and user feedback.
Triage product or system issues, and debug, track, and resolve them by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality. Leverage AI to carry out core responsibilities effectively.
The employer’s company overview, benefits, equal-opportunity statement and generic skills tables are left out here; they are on the original posting.

One year, and heavy on algorithms
Two requirements decide this one: a year of coding in a single language, and a year of data structures and algorithms. Go, Kubernetes and GCP sit on the preferred list, which for a VM team inside Google Distributed Cloud reads as close to the day job.
Interviews at this level in Bengaluru lean on the algorithmic side: arrays, graphs, trees, dynamic programming, complexity, all in one language you know cold. Pick that language now and stop switching. If Go isn't it, that's workable, though you'll be reading and writing Go once you're in.
Air-gapped changes the day job
GDC air-gapped runs for large customers with regulatory constraints, in environments cut off from the public internet and from Google's own control plane. Installs, upgrades, patching and log collection all have to work offline, and there's no managed service to fall back on when something breaks.
Practical grounding in Linux, containers and Kubernetes internals counts for more here than cloud API familiarity. Ask which slice of the VM stack you'd own, since the team builds the layer that runs virtual machines on the platform.
Design docs are part of the job
Reviewing other engineers' designs and code sits in the responsibilities, alongside working with PMs and TPMs and adapting documentation. A real share of the week goes to reading, commenting and writing. You'll also be triaging issues across hardware, network and service layers.
The listing names AI as part of how the work gets done. Fluency with an AI coding assistant is table stakes here, and it's worth being honest about how you use one.
Air-gapped GDC and the VM layer
Air-gapped GDC is a private deployment for very large customers under strict rules. It has no route to the public internet and no link to Google's central management systems.
Installation, patching and log collection happen with no outside connection. The VM team sits at the center of that infrastructure and builds the product early. Kubernetes schedules and runs containers across machines and is on the preferred qualifications.
Design review to issue triage
Design review means reading another engineer's design document and their code, then giving feedback tied to best practices. Collaboration with other engineers, PMs and TPMs is part of delivering a high-quality system.
Triage traces a product or system fault to its cause and sizes the effect on hardware, network or service operations and quality. Debugging, tracking and resolving follow.
