HireSetu's note

A week split between site and desk

The good mornings are on site: walking a fit-out with a senior engineer, spotting a clash or a badly finished wall, photographing it and writing it up. That happens two or three times a week. The rest is registers: drawing revisions, submittal logs, meeting minutes, action items, contractor quotations, cost sheets. Freshers are surprised by how much of construction project management is chasing paperwork, and how much of it is chasing people to sign that paperwork.

The MMR is a large area. Thane, Navi Mumbai and South Mumbai in one week is realistic, so ask where your projects sit and how travel is handled. Fit-out deadlines also bring the occasional late evening, which is worth knowing before you say yes.

The two-year view

Two years here leaves you with a set of completed fit-outs, a contractor and vendor network, and hands-on familiarity with the paperwork that runs a project. The step after this is an assistant project manager role on a single asset class, inside a consultancy, a developer, or an occupier's in-house team. Someone who can read a drawing, compare quotations and keep a cost register current moves between all three.

Hindi matters more than the posting lets on. Site crews, vendors and consultants across Mumbai work largely in it, and part of your day goes into getting a straight answer out of someone who would rather not give one.
