Quick answer: A Bengaluru developer role inside IBM's internal CIO platforms, building generative AI features: RAG pipelines, AI agents, and the REST APIs and databases they sit on. The perks read like an early-career package, with mentorship and hands-on exposure spelled out.

From IBM's job posting

Introduction

The IBM Chief Information Officer (CIO) organization drives IBM's enterprise technology strategy and digital transformation. The CIO Technology Platform Transformation (TPT) team builds AI-first platforms and intelligent engineering solutions that modernize enterprise IT, improve developer productivity, enhance operational excellence, and accelerate business innovation through Artificial Intelligence, Automation, Cloud, and Data.

Your role and responsibilities

You will contribute to projects involving Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), AI Agents, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Machine Learning, backend and web development, databases, cloud-native technologies, and software engineering while gaining hands-on experience building enterprise technology solutions.

What you'll Gain

  • Hands-on experience building enterprise AI and software applications.
  • Exposure to Generative AI, Agentic AI, intelligent automation, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Experience working with cloud-native technologies, APIs, databases, and DevOps practices.
  • Mentorship from IBM AI and Software Engineering experts.
  • Experience contributing to production-grade AI and software solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to understand project requirements and build AI-enabled applications and services.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-organized, efficient, and well-tested code using modern programming languages and frameworks.
  • Develop and integrate Generative AI solutions using Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • Build AI Agents and Agentic AI workflows using modern AI frameworks.
  • Design and implement Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions.
  • Develop REST APIs, backend services, web applications, and AI integrations.
  • Work with databases, SQL, and NoSQL technologies as required by projects.
  • Conduct unit testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and participate in code reviews to ensure software quality and adherence to coding standards.

The breadth is the bar

Read the responsibilities as a single job. You wire LLMs into applications, build agent workflows and retrieval, expose the result as REST APIs, back it with SQL or NoSQL stores and push it through CI/CD. Many candidates can do one of those.

The people who fit have connected a model to a real service: an endpoint that takes a query, pulls context, calls the model and returns an answer. If your AI experience stops at training a model in a notebook, the backend half of this role is the gap to close first.

Put the shipped project first

Lead your CV with the project closest to this work and describe what you built and what it ran on. A working RAG or agent demo counts for more than a certificate here: name the model you called, how you chunked and embedded documents, where the vectors lived, and how the API in front of it was deployed.

SQL, Git, CI/CD and REST APIs appear as flat requirements, so keep them in your skills line and let two of them show up in a project description. Agile is listed too, so a line on how your team split work and reviewed code is fair game.

Revise the retrieval side

Retrieval-Augmented Generation is the term to understand properly: chunking choices, embeddings, similarity search, and what happens when the retrieved context is stale or missing. Be able to say how you would judge whether a RAG system answers well, since a demo that looks fine proves little.

Agents are the other half. Know what tool calling involves and what should happen when a step in a chain fails. On the conventional side, revise SQL joins and indexes, HTTP status codes, and how a pipeline runs tests before a merge.

Switching in from backend work

Backend developers who have spent a few evenings on LLM APIs are a genuine fit. The software engineering requirements, REST, databases, version control, testing, make up half the posting and they are the harder half to pick up on the job. Learn the retrieval concepts, then build one small end-to-end app you can walk through.

Fresh graduates should treat the GenAI stack as something to demonstrate. A repo you can open and explain carries the conversation further than a list of buzzwords. Ask how the team splits platform work from project delivery, because a CIO organisation serves internal users and its priorities move.
