Quick answer: A machine learning group inside KLA's EBeam division, building algorithms that sharpen semiconductor inspection tools. Either a master's with no work experience or a bachelor's plus two years of related work clears the bar.

From KLA's job posting

KLA is a global leader in diversified electronics for the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem. Virtually every electronic device in the world is produced using our technologies. No laptop, smartphone, wearable device, voice-controlled gadget, flexible screen, VR device or smart car would have made it into your hands without us. KLA invents systems and solutions for the manufacturing of wafers and reticles, integrated circuits, packaging, printed circuit boards and flat panel displays.

The innovative ideas and devices that are advancing humanity all begin with inspiration, research and development. KLA focuses more than average on innovation and we invest 15% of sales back into R&D. Our expert teams of physicists, engineers, data scientists and problem-solvers work together with the world’s leading technology providers to accelerate the delivery of tomorrow’s electronic devices.

Life here is exciting and our teams thrive on tackling really hard problems. There is never a dull moment with us.

Group/Division

With over 40 years of semiconductor process control experience, chipmakers around the globe rely on KLA to ensure that their fabs ramp next-generation devices to volume production quickly and cost-effectively.

Enabling the movement towards advanced chip design, KLA's Global Products Group (GPG), which is responsible for creating all of KLA’s metrology and inspection products, is looking for the best and the brightest research scientist, software engineers, application development engineers, and senior product technology process engineers. First to deliver the best imaging and classification data for every defect or point on any layer at any time.

EBeam’s mission encapsulates its role as the “eyes” of KLA’s product line, providing timely information on defects and critical locations on the wafer at the highest spatial resolution possible. Customers use EBeam products alongside KLA patterned and bare wafer inspectors to quickly understand the nature of defects and other imperfections on product wafers and take action to correct the manufacturing process.

HireSetu's note

The degree maths is strict

A master's degree with zero experience gets you in, or a bachelor's with two years of related work. Two years is not much time, so that second route only makes sense if those years went into machine learning, algorithms or imaging code. A master's in computer vision or deep learning with a real thesis sits in the middle of what KLA describes. Two years of general backend or web work won't read as related, however strong the engineering.

Research and engineering in one job

The work runs as a loop: understand the problem and the data, study what has already been tried, form a concept, build a prototype, prove it holds up, then write the requirements that turn it into shipped software. Productisation is named in the listing, so that last step is a real part of the job and not an afterthought. Expect weeks spent reading and analysing, and weeks spent fighting code and data pipelines. Anyone who only wants to train models will find the packaging side tedious.

Learn the data before the model

KLA's EBeam tools image wafers to find defects and critical locations at very high resolution, and this group's algorithms improve how well they do it. That points to image data, heavy class imbalance, very small objects, and a factory floor where one missed defect is expensive. You don't need fab physics on day one, but being able to look at a noisy wafer image and ask sensible questions about it matters. A thesis on small-object detection or anomaly detection maps onto this work cleanly.

A narrow field with deep roots

Semiconductor process control is a small industry, and KLA is one of its biggest names. Two years here buys you imaging and ML experience that travels well to industrial vision, medical imaging and other inspection companies. The trade-off is a specialised vocabulary, so the longer you stay, the more your next move looks like another chip tooling company. Ask which EBeam product you'd be attached to, since the tools themselves live in a lab.

How to apply

  1. Open KLA's careers site with the Apply button.
  2. Create a Workday account for KLA. Workday logins are separate for every company, so an account made for another employer won't work here.
  3. Upload your resume and check every auto-filled field; Workday often misreads dates and job titles.
  4. Answer the screening questions, submit, and look for the confirmation email from Workday.
