HireSetu's note

Matching payments is the craft here

Most of your day answers one question: which invoice does this payment belong to? Wires arrive short, a customer pays three invoices in one transfer, someone types the wrong reference. You find the invoice, post it, document why. The rest is follow-up, on reminders and on customers who claim they've already paid.

That means volume and repetition: a few hundred payments a month, ageing buckets that have to tie back to the ledger. Checking the same details carefully is the whole job.

Accounting basics you'll actually use

Debits and credits come up in any finance interview, but what matters here is the invoice-to-receipt cycle: how a sale becomes a receivable, what a credit note does, why unapplied cash is a problem, and what the 0-30, 31-60 and 60-90 ageing buckets tell a collections team. Learn what an adjustment or a write-off means in practice, and the difference between a customer paying late and a customer disputing the bill. The follow-up differs.

In India, receipts rarely land at the exact invoice value, because customers deduct TDS and GST sits on the invoice. Knowing why a payment comes in short stops you flagging a normal deduction as an error.

Excel shortcuts that pay off

VLOOKUP and pivots are the minimum. Practise on a messy payment file: match receipts to invoices, strip duplicates, use SUMIFS to total what's still open, sort by due date. Anything you can do without reaching for the mouse is time back on a two-hundred-line upload.

ERP screen names change between SAP, Oracle and the in-house tools finance teams run. Understand the flow, payment received, applied to invoice, invoice closed, unapplied amount parked in a clearing account, and you'll pick up any system quickly.

Career path and shift timings

AR sits inside order-to-cash. After a year or two, the natural move is a senior AR or OTC analyst role, then team lead, or sideways into general ledger and month-end close. Chennai has a deep bench of finance operations centres, so these skills travel well between employers.

Ask about shift timings and which geography the process supports when you're called. Finance centres in the city run rotations that follow client time zones, and that shapes your day more than the job title does.
