Quick answer: Verification and validation of operator controls, switches, keypads, indicators and vehicle I/O modules, with most of the work happening on a test bench or in an environmental chamber. The experience bar splits by degree: 0 to 2 years with a master's, 2 to 4 with a bachelor's.
From Eaton's job posting
What you’ll do
Eaton announced, on June 11, 20206, the intent to combine its Mobility Group (including both the Vehicle and eMobility segments) with a new company. We expect to complete this process by the end of the first half of 2027. The compensation and benefits that will initially be offered for this position are based on Eaton's plans, programs and practices. If you are offered and accept this position and are actively employed by the Mobility Group when the transaction closes, the new company will provide further details to employees concerning compensation and benefits at that time.
This position is part of the Vehicle Controls Product Line engineering team and supports verification and validation of rugged operator-control products for on-road and off-road vehicles and commercial mobile equipment. Products include rocker, toggle, push-button, key-lock, and rotary switches; indicators; multiplexed keypads and electronic switch modules; operator-control and human-machine interface products; and vehicle input/output modules.
The engineer will translate customer, system, electronics, mechanical, software, environmental, reliability, safety, and regulatory requirements into traceable verification plans, test procedures, test setups, and objective evidence.
The role supports the full product-development cycle—from requirements review and design-risk assessment through prototype evaluation, design verification, product validation, production launch, and lifecycle support—and may also support electronics hardware design, schematic review, component selection, circuit calculations, printed circuit board design reviews, bring-up, and debugging under guidance from senior engineers.
"What you’ll do
- Review customer, system, hardware, software, mechanical, safety, environmental, reliability, and regulatory requirements and convert them into clear, measurable verification criteria.
- Develop and maintain requirements traceability, Design Verification Plans and Reports, test plans, test cases, procedures, acceptance criteria, schedules, and compliance evidence for Vehicle Controls products.
- Verify and validate rocker, toggle, push-button, key-lock, and rotary switches; indicators; multiplexed keypads and electronic switch modules; operator-control and human-machine interface products; and vehicle input/output modules.
- Plan and execute functional, electrical, electronic, mechanical, environmental, electromagnetic compatibility, ingress-protection, vibration, shock, thermal, durability, operating-force and travel, tactile-response, communication, and fault-insertion testing, as applicable.
- Design, assemble, commission, and troubleshoot test fixtures, wiring harnesses, loads, instrumentation, data-acquisition systems, and automated or semi-automated test setups.
- Select suitable internal and external laboratories, coordinate test readiness and sample availability, witness testing when required, and drive accurate, on-time completion of planned activities.
- Analyze test data, determine pass/fail status, document observations and conclusions, and communicate coverage, progress, risks, and results to project stakeholders.
- Investigate failures using structured problem-solving methods; reproduce issues, isolate root causes, support corrective actions, and verify their effectiveness.
- Participate in design reviews, requirements reviews, design failure mode and effects analysis, test-readiness reviews, and product-release reviews; provide testability, robustness, and risk-reduction recommendations.
- Support electronics hardware design activities, including schematic and bill-of-material reviews, component selection and derating, circuit calculations and simulation, printed circuit board layout reviews, prototype bring-up, bench debugging, and design documentation.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, Automotive Engineering, or a related discipline; a master’s degree is preferred.
0–2 years of relevant experience with a master’s degree, or 2–4 years with a bachelor’s degree, in product verification and validation, electronics testing, or electronics hardware design. Automotive, off-highway, or vehicle-control product experience is preferred.

HireSetu's note
The degree decides the bar
The 0 to 4 years in the tag is really two brackets: 0 to 2 with a master's, 2 to 4 with a bachelor's. A BE graduate straight out of college is not who this is written for, while a fresh ME with a project on switches, keypads or instrument clusters sits right in it. Relevant experience means product V&V, electronics testing or electronics hardware design, not software QA under a similar job title. Automotive and off-highway exposure is preferred, so a controls, switchgear or harness background is worth leading with. Come in under the stated years but with the testing work behind you, apply, and be clear about which bracket you fall in.
Most of the week happens at a bench
You'll spend more time with a scope, a DMM and a harness you wired yourself than with documents. The job is building and debugging fixtures, loads, instrumentation and data-acquisition setups, then running functional, thermal, vibration, shock, ingress-protection and EMC tests, several of them at outside labs you help pick and travel to witness. Between test runs there are procedures to write, pass/fail calls to defend and failures to chase to a root cause that holds up.
The electronics hardware side is real but sits behind the testing: schematic and BOM reviews, derating calculations, PCB layout comments, prototype bring-up and bench debugging, all under a senior engineer. It's a decent way to build design skills from the test side.
One thing to check. This role sits in Eaton's Mobility Group, which is being combined into a separate company by the first half of 2027. Ask who the employer will be if you join now, and what happens to the team at close.
