Caterpillar Returnship is a 24-week company paid; office-based program designed to enable a soft launch for experienced professionals on a career break. This initiative includes, networking sessions, coaching, trainings, and a project / work scope assignment.

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Mainframe Developer with hands-on experience in designing, developing, enhancing, and supporting enterprise mainframe applications. The candidate should have strong technical expertise in COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS and VSAM, along with experience supporting business-critical applications and working with cross-functional teams.

What You Will Do

  • Design, develop, test and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS and VSAM.
  • Analyze business requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions.
  • Develop and enhance batch and online applications.
  • Perform complex application debugging, root-cause analysis and production issue resolution.
  • Write and optimize DB2 SQL queries, COBOL programs and JCL jobs.
  • Support production batch cycles and resolve job failures and application incidents.
  • Perform impact analysis for application enhancements and system/interface changes.
  • Work with upstream and downstream applications to troubleshoot integration and data-flow issues.
  • Participate in code reviews and ensure adherence to development and quality standards.
  • Support application releases, implementation and post-production validation.
  • Create and maintain technical specifications, application documentation and support procedures.
  • Mentor junior developers and provide technical guidance.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, application teams, infrastructure teams and other stakeholders.
  • Drive automation and continuous improvement opportunities within mainframe development and support.

Six months off, senior expectations

The gate is your break: a minimum of six months away from work, and the program runs 24 weeks, paid, from the Bengaluru office. Treat the break as the eligibility criterion it is and put the dates plainly on your CV.

Don't read the returnship label as a lowered bar. This listing asks for someone who owns deliverables end to end, runs impact analysis, reviews other people's code and mentors juniors. Build the CV around the applications you supported and the incidents you closed, with the system names and rough volumes attached. A tidy list of tools reads junior here.

Production failures are the day job

A large share of this work is keeping business-critical batch and online applications running: job failures, abends, data-flow problems between upstream and downstream systems, post-release validation. Debugging and root-cause analysis sit in the must-have list for that reason.

If most of your experience was writing new programs, spend a week on the failure side before you apply. JCL abend codes, DB2 utility errors, CICS transaction dumps, and how you would trace a bad record back through VSAM files. That is the material you will actually talk about.

The preferred list, z/OS, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, Changeman or Endevor, Control-M, File-AID and Abend-AID, describes someone who has sat on support rotation. Name the ones you have genuinely used. A scheduler can be learned in a week; explaining why a job ran late is a different matter.

One thing to settle early: what happens after week 24. The program is a fixed window, so ask about conversion before you accept.
