Quick answer: Composite testing for satellite structures, from coupon specimens up to component validation, at a company building direct-to-phone satellite connectivity. Hands-on composites lab time is the thread running through the requirements.
From AST SpaceMobile's job posting
AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio and designed for both commercial and government applications. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today’s five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected.
Position Overview
Materials Engineer will perform material selection, qualification, testing and analysis of composite materials used in satellite structures, supporting material and design qualification for space applications. This role executes thermal, mechanical, and microstructural testing, interprets and cross-correlates results to assess material integrity, and documents findings that support qualification of flight hardware materials.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and execute mechanical, thermal, and microstructural testing of composite materials and structural components specific to satellite hardware.
Operate and interpret data from DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry), DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis), UTM (Universal Testing Machine), surface energy analyzer, optical microscopy, profilometry and other composite and polymer testing.
Cross-correlate results across test methods to assess material integrity, performance, and failure behavior.
Perform statistical analysis of test data, including B-basis allowable development, and apply design of experiments to test planning.
Support material and design qualification campaigns for space applications, from coupon-level testing through structural component validation.
Design and oversee qualification procedures for composite materials and structures, including test plans, acceptance criteria, and execution against space program requirements.
Document findings in test reports, data packages, and qualification records that support material qualification and program milestones.
Partner with Design, Structures, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to translate test results into material selection and design decisions.
Education
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
Experience
0–3 years in materials testing, composites, or structural test engineering within aerospace or manufacturing environments.
Hands-on composite lab and testing experience, including specimen preparation, fixturing, and test execution.
Experience with space materials, ideally in aerospace or space structural applications.
Working knowledge of thermal, mechanical, and microstructural characterization methods and data interpretation
Proficiency with CAD software (Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and SolidWorks) for reviewing designs and developing test fixtures.
Strong understanding of the mechanics of composite materials, including failure criteria.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with DSC, DMA, UTM, optical microscopy, and profilometry, and with composite testing generally.
Statistical analysis for B-basis allowable and design of experiments (DOE).
Familiarity with composite test standards and material qualification programs.
Exposure to aerospace hardware development, testing, or manufacturing
Ability to manage complex, cross-functional environments
Ability to work across multiple time zones with schedule flexibility
Technology Stack
Proficiency in composite material testing and standards.
CAD software: Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and SolidWorks.
Availability to travel domestically and internationally
This job description may not be inclusive to the duties and responsibilities listed. Additional tasks may be assigned to the employee from time to time or the scope of the job may change as needed by business demands.

HireSetu's note
The composites lab is the filter
Testing composites for satellite structures means specimens, fixtures and instruments, and the listing says so twice. Hands-on composite lab experience, including specimen preparation, fixturing and test execution, sits in the required list. DSC, DMA and UTM appear in the responsibilities, the requirements and again under preferred, so instrument time counts for more than a long software list.
CAD shows up too, for reviewing designs and building test fixtures. Pick one of Inventor, AutoCAD or SolidWorks and be fluent in it instead of claiming all three.
It's bench work most days
The assumption about materials engineering is that you spend your hours on analysis. Here the work starts as physical parts: coupons cut from laminates, mounted and polished for microscopy, loaded into a UTM until they fail. Failed grips, slipped strain gauges and specimens that snap at the grip are ordinary parts of the day.
The write-ups carry as much weight as the testing. Test reports, data packages and qualification records are what the design and structures teams use to make decisions, and a result nobody can reproduce is dead weight.
Topics worth revising
Know what each instrument measures, because the results get cross-correlated: DSC for cure and glass transition, DMA for modulus and damping across a temperature sweep, UTM for tensile, compressive and flexural properties. Optical microscopy and profilometry are about surfaces and failure features.
Composite failure criteria are called out, so be able to sketch Tsai-Wu and Hashin and say when each applies. B-basis allowables are aerospace design values with statistical confidence behind them, and the sample-size maths rewards an evening. The ASTM set around this work is D3039, D790, D3410 and D2344. Voids, fiber volume fraction and delamination are what to look for when a number surprises you.
After a year or two
Materials and process engineering is the move from a seat like this, and coupon-to-component qualification on flight hardware is the experience other aerospace suppliers hire for. Test engineers who understand how composites actually fail also get pulled into design and stress teams.
The role travels, domestically and internationally, with cross-team work across time zones. Keep a passport current.
