HireSetu's note
The GPA gate comes first
Two things get your file read: an engineering bachelor's degree and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. If your marks sit on a 10-point scale, that is roughly the 7.5/10 band at Indian institutes, and TI runs the conversion itself. Know your number before anyone asks for it.
The preferred list is all soft skills: communication, stakeholder relationships, initiative, time management. Those lines sit in every TI posting and nobody gets shortlisted on them. The cut happens on the degree, the GPA and any prior brush with layout, whether that came from a VLSI elective, a project or an internship.
Geometry from schematics, hours in the tool
The work is geometry from schematics. A designer hands over a circuit, you build the physical drawing in CAD, check dimensions, write specs and verify the finished plot. Expect long stretches inside the tool, moving shapes, re-running checks, fixing what they flag, then sitting with the designer when something cannot move.
It is onsite, full-time, in Bengaluru. Layout is patient, repetitive work with deadlines tied to the chip schedule. Whether it suits you comes down to whether small corrections, repeated for hours, feel satisfying or maddening.
Layout compounds over two years
The first year goes into the tool flow and one process's design rules. After that you take bigger blocks, floorplan your own work and clear your own verification errors before review. From there the usual moves are senior layout, physical design or verification, or CAD and EDA support.
Keep a private record of the blocks you drew and the problems you solved on each. Two years in, that record is what your next move is built from.
Confirm the group and the tool flow
Ask which group the role sits in and which products that group touches. TI spans analog, embedded processing and a long list of end markets, and layout work differs across them.
Ask which CAD suite and which verification tools the team runs on. Learning a new flow is most of your first month's cost if it differs from what you trained on. Ask, too, whether the intake is all fresh graduates or mixed, because that decides how much supervision you get early.
