Jobs outside the big metros: where they are and whether to take one

Vadodara, Sanand, Coimbatore, Kochi, Lucknow, Udaipur. Fewer listings, different work, lower rent, and a different kind of first two years.

48 of our live listings were outside the large metros, and a third of those were in Gujarat. What kind of work they were, and how to weigh one.

Most fresher searches start and end with Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and the NCR, and most listings sit there. Of HireSetu's 494 live listings in late October 2026, 430 named one of those metros, Kolkata or Ahmedabad. Ten were remote or did not name a city, and six named only a state or a site we could not place. The remaining 48 were in smaller cities and industrial towns, and they were not a random scatter.

Sixteen of the 48 were in Gujarat: Vadodara and the Maneja and Savli industrial areas around it, Sanand, Gandhinagar, Surendranagar and Surat. Seven were in non-metro Maharashtra, such as Nagpur, Ranjangaon, Shirwal and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. Seven were in Tamil Nadu outside Chennai, five in Kerala, five in Rajasthan, three in Lucknow, three around Chandigarh and Mohali, and one each in Indore and Hoskote.

The pattern is clear enough to use. Outside the metros, the jobs are disproportionately in plants, engineering centres and delivery centres that companies placed there for land, cost or proximity to manufacturing. A mechanical, electrical or production graduate has relatively more options in Vadodara than in Bengaluru. A software graduate has fewer, but the ones that exist are often less crowded.

Weighing an offer in a smaller city

A first job outside the big metros

Pros

  • Rent and daily costs are usually much lower, so the same salary goes further
  • Plant and engineering roles are often closer to real hardware and real production
  • Smaller teams can mean more responsibility sooner
  • Fewer applicants per role in some cities
  • Shorter commutes, and often closer to home for people from the region

Cons

  • Fewer employers nearby, so switching jobs may mean moving
  • Fewer meetups, communities and peers in the same field
  • Some industrial sites are outside the city, with long daily travel
  • Pay bands are sometimes set lower for non-metro locations
  • Partners or families may find fewer options in the same city

The cost side deserves a real calculation. Take the in-hand monthly pay of each offer, subtract a realistic rent for a shared flat near the workplace, food and travel, and compare what is left. A lower CTC in Vadodara can leave more each month than a higher one in Bengaluru, and the article on location and salary on HireSetu walks through that arithmetic.

Five questions before you accept

  1. 1 Is the work itself what you want on your resume in two years?
  2. 2 Where exactly is the site, and how will you travel there every day?
  3. 3 How many other employers in your field are in the same city?
  4. 4 What is left each month after rent, food and travel, compared with your other options?
  5. 5 Does the company have locations elsewhere, and can people move internally after a year or two?

If the first answer is yes and the last is yes, the city matters less than it seems.

Before an interview for a plant-based role, look up the site on a map and the bus or company transport routes to it. Telling the interviewer you already know how you would reach a site twenty kilometres outside the city answers a question they were going to ask anyway.
