The graduation-year line in a fresher listing, and what to do if you miss it
"2025 or 2026 graduates", "graduating in 2027 without any backlogs", "no gap in studies": three short lines that decide who gets past the form.
Fifteen live listings named the years they accept. How firm those lines are, and what a 2024 graduate or a student with a backlog can still apply for.
Lam Research's listing for a Manufacturing Engineer 1 in Bengaluru has a requirement that most readers skim past: graduating in 2027 without any backlogs, with a minimum of 65% aggregate. A strong 2025 mechanical graduate reads the responsibilities, recognises every one of them, and applies. The application form asks for the year of passing in a dropdown, and that is usually where it ends.
On 22 October 2026, 15 of the 491 live HireSetu listings that carried a full job description named the graduation years they would accept. Eight set a backlog rule, and eight set a percentage or CGPA floor. They are a minority of our curated entry-level listings, and these lines matter more than their numbers suggest, because they decide whether an application is read by anyone at all.
The three kinds of year line
Campus-cycle hiring
Aimed at one graduating batch, often with a joining date months away. Hard to enter from outside that year.
- Lam Research: graduating in 2027 without any backlogs
- Amazon, SDE I (University Talent Acquisition): graduated in 2026
- Zycus, graduate trainee: BE/B.Tech graduating in 2026
- Google, Silicon Engineer: University Graduate, 2026
Recent-graduate windows
Two or three years accepted together. Usually apprenticeships and trainee programmes.
- Volvo, NATS apprentices: year of graduation 2024, 2025 or 2026
- Cisco, software engineer trainee: graduated in 2025 or 2026
- Synopsys, apprenticeship: class of 2025 or 2026
- Birlasoft, enterprise apps roles: 2025 or 2026 graduates, or recent graduates
Lines that look out of date
A year that has already passed in a listing posted now. Often a template nobody updated, so ask before ruling yourself out.
- Equifax, technology engineering trainee: Bachelor's degree, graduation date June 2024
The wording tells you how firm the line is. "Graduated in 2026" with nothing after it is a filter. "2025/2026 graduates or recent graduates", as Birlasoft writes it, leaves a door open for someone who finished in 2024 and can explain the year since. And a year that has already gone by, like Equifax's June 2024, deserves a polite question to the recruiter before you skip it silently.
Backlogs, percentages and gaps
The backlog lines come in two strengths. Most say "no active backlogs", which means nothing pending on the day you apply: Itron, EY and Volvo's CampX programme use that wording. Zycus goes further and asks for no history of backlogs or arrears at all, alongside 80% in 10th, 12th and the degree. Harmonic, hiring an associate embedded software engineer, asks for 85% or 8.5 CGPA, no current backlogs, and no repeat year or gap in studies.
A cleared backlog therefore passes most of these filters and fails a few. Read for the word "history" or "arrears", and for any mention of gaps or repeated years. Those are the lines that look at your past and care little about your result sheet today.
Four graduates, the same week of listings
Graduated in 2024, working a non-technical job since
Campus-cycle roles are closed. Volvo's NATS listings still accept 2024 graduates, and lines like "or recent graduates" are worth applying to with a short note on what the last two years involved. Listings asking for 0 to 2 years of experience are open too, and they rarely ask the year.
- Apply: windows that include 2024, "recent graduates" wording, 0 to 2 year roles
- Skip: single-batch campus roles
Final-year student, graduating in 2027
Lam Research-style roles are written for you, and most of the trainee windows above are not yet. Apprenticeships need a degree or provisional certificate before the contract starts.
- Apply: roles that name 2027 or "graduating" this academic year
- Wait: NATS seats, until results are out
2025 graduate who cleared one backlog late
"No active backlogs" is met. "No history of backlogs" is not, so Zycus-type listings are out. Everything that sets only a year window or a percentage floor stays open.
- Read every listing for the words history, arrears or cleared in first attempt
Took a year out between 12th and engineering
Only listings that mention gaps, like Harmonic's, rule this out by rule. Elsewhere the gap is a question in the HR round, and a one-line honest answer is enough.
- Have the one-line answer ready: what the year was and what came out of it
What not to do with the dropdown
Picking a later year to get past the form is tempting. Do not. Background verification checks degree dates against the university's records, usually after the offer, and a mismatch at that stage normally costs you the offer, after weeks of interviews. A rejected application costs you one listing.
When the line is soft or looks out of date, ask. A recruiter's address or a careers contact is often on the company's careers page, and a short, specific message gets read far more often than a long one. Something like this is enough:
A three-line question to a recruiter
Subject: Eligibility question, Technology Engineering Trainee (requisition number). The listing mentions a graduation date of June 2024. I graduated in B.Tech Computer Science in May 2025 with no backlogs. Is the role open to 2025 graduates, so that I can apply?
It names the role, quotes the line, gives your facts and asks one question that can be answered with yes or no. If the answer is no, you have lost five minutes. If it is yes, you are one of very few applicants who checked.
Before you read the responsibilities, read the lines that decide whether anyone else will read your application.
- Find the year line. One year, a window, or "recent graduates"?
- Find the backlog line. Active, or history?
- Find the percentage or CGPA floor, and check whether it covers 10th and 12th as well as the degree.
- Look for gap, repeat year or "completed in first attempt".
- Only then read the job itself. If the block rules you out and the wording is firm, move on; if it is soft or dated, apply and say why in one line.
For how much a CGPA floor matters once you pass it, see the separate guide on where CGPA counts in hiring.
Keep one text file with your exact dates: the month each semester result came out, the date of the final result, the date on the provisional certificate, and any backlog with the month it was cleared. Application forms ask these in different ways, and answering all of them from the same file keeps your story consistent when the background check compares them.
