What the words in a Big 4 job title are telling you

"Analyst - Forensics - National - ASU - Investigations & Compliance - Noida" is not a typo. Every part of it means something, and two of them matter a lot.

Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC titles pack in the grade, the entity, the practice and the city. How to read them before you apply, using 20 live listings.

HireSetu had 20 live Big 4 listings in late October 2026: nine from Deloitte, five each from EY and KPMG, and one from PwC. Their titles look like someone pasted a database row into a heading. EY's "Analyst - Forensics - National - ASU - Forensics - Investigations & Compliance - Noida" is a real example. So is KPMG's "Analyst - GDC / Associate 1", and Deloitte's "Executive - Risk Tech (PySpark Developer), Regulatory & Financial Risk".

Those titles are built from parts, and the parts follow rules inside each firm. Once you can read them, you know your grade, which legal entity you would join, which practice you would sit in and where, before you read a line of the description.

One title, taken apart

Analyst - Forensics - National - ASU - Forensics - Investigations & Compliance - Noida

Analyst

The grade. At EY in India, Analyst is a common entry grade for graduates; Consultant usually comes next.

Forensics

The service line, the broad area of work.

National

The entity: EY's India member firm serving Indian clients, as opposed to EY GDS, which delivers work for EY firms abroad.

ASU

An internal business unit code. You do not need to decode it, but it tells HR exactly which team the requisition belongs to.

Investigations & Compliance

The sub-practice: the actual kind of work you would do.

Noida

The office. Big 4 roles are usually tied to one city.

Other firms order the parts differently, but most titles carry the same four pieces of information: grade, entity, practice and city.

The entity matters more than the brand

Each Big 4 firm in India operates through more than one entity, and they do different work. Some serve Indian clients directly. Others are delivery or capability centres that do work for the firm's offices in the US, UK and elsewhere, with different hours, clients and career ladders. Titles and portals usually give it away: EY uses "National" for the India practice and GDS for its global delivery centre; KPMG's listings in our set came through KPMG Global Services and KPMG Delivery Network portals, with codes like GDC, GCS and GTS in the title; Deloitte's listings named Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP as the entity.

Why it matters: an India-practice audit or tax role means Indian clients, Indian regulations and often travel to client sites in India. A global delivery role means work for foreign offices, often on their time zone, with tools and standards from abroad. Both carry the brand; they lead to different careers. Ask HR which entity issues the offer letter.

Grades in our 20 listings

Titles as listed on HireSetu, late October 2026, with the experience each asked for

FirmEntry-grade titles seenExperience asked
DeloitteAnalyst (ITSM, Oracle integration, procurement tech, D365, data analysis, AI/ML, RPA), Executive (forensics, risk tech)Mostly 0 to 2 years
EYAnalyst (forensics, assurance), Associate (operations), Consultant (tax), plus an off-campus testing role0 to 2 years
KPMGAnalyst / Associate 1, Associate 1, Associate 20 to 3 years
PwCSpecialist (accounts receivable operations)0 to 1 year

Three things stand out. First, the same word means different levels at different firms: Associate is an entry grade at KPMG's global centres, while EY used it here for an operations role. Second, KPMG numbers its associate grades, so "Associate 2" sits above "Associate 1" and asked for up to three years. Third, Executive at Deloitte in these listings was still an early-career grade and sat far below a senior one. Never compare titles across firms; compare the experience asked and the work described.

A typical early ladder, in broad strokes

Names differ by firm and entity. The shape is similar.

Entry grade: Analyst, Associate, Associate 1, Executive or Specialist
Second grade: Senior Analyst, Consultant, Associate 2 or Senior Associate
Third grade: Senior Consultant or Assistant Manager
Manager, then Senior Manager
Director or Associate Director, then Partner

Promotion timing depends on firm, practice and performance; ask what the usual time in grade is during the HR round.

Who these roles take

Big 4 entry roles are one of the few places where engineering and commerce graduates apply side by side. Among our 20 listings, KPMG's control testing role accepted B.Com, B.Sc or B.Tech graduates; Deloitte's data analysis role in its national office asked for B.Com, BBA or CA Inter; Deloitte's forensic role named CA, law and finance MBA freshers; and Deloitte's AI and ML analyst listing accepted degrees from B.Tech to B.Sc, B.Com, BCA and MBA. Technology roles such as the PySpark developer or Azure data engineering still expect a technical degree.

Before applying, rewrite the title in your own words on one line: grade, entity, practice, city. If you cannot fill all four from the listing, that is the first question for the recruiter, and asking it shows you already understand how these firms are organised.
